The Sensex, which had gained nearly 850 points by midday on Friday afternoon, had subsequently lost nearly 1,000 points. The day’s low was 137 points, with the trading closing at 52,794.
Stock market indices declined for the sixth consecutive day on Friday as heavy losses in banking, finance and metal stocks swallowed gains in automobile, consumer goods and pharma stocks.
Investors worried by the ever-rising inflation and the aggressive policy of central banks are pulling out money alike.
The Sensex had gained nearly 850 points as of Friday afternoon. But after the outbreak, it lost nearly 1,000 points. The 30-share BSE Sensex closed at 137 points or 0.39 per cent at the end of the day.
The stock fell 0.26% to 52,794. Meanwhile, the broader NSE Nifty 50 Index was up by 26 points. It fell 0.16% and settled at 15,782. The Sensex was trading at 1,131 points in today’s trading.
Nifty Midcap 100% 1.03 and Smallcap of 1%. Mid and small cap stocks weakened by 0.94%.
Seven of the 15 stocks on the National Stock Exchange closed in red. Sub-indices Nifty Bank, Nifty Financial Services and Nifty Metal, respectively The major indices were down by 1.23, 1.26 and 2.08 per cent.
Hindalco suffered the most losses when it came to the issue of shares. The stock closed at Rs 386.20, down 4.84%. SBI, JSW Steel, ICICI Bank and Bharti Airtel also suffered losses.
However, the market breadth was positive as 2,159 stocks traded on BSE and 1,178 declined.
The 30-share BSE index, SBI, ICICI Bank, NTPC, Airtel, Axis Bank, Maruti Suzuki, Tata Steel, Bajaj FinServe, Bajaj Finance, Wipro, HDFC Bank, HDFC and Tech Mahindra were the biggest losers.
In contrast, Sun Pharma, M&M, ITC, Hindustan Unilever, Titan, Reliance Industries, Dr Reddy’s, Asian Paints, Nestle India, Kotak Mahindra Bank and UltraTech Cement finished the week trading in green.
Shares of Tata Motors were also up 0.6 per cent in the fourth quarter. It was up 8.51 per cent to Rs 404.
